The clubs annual weekend away at Glaramara Hotel, in the Lake District attracted only 13 member's of the club this year, but the weather was dry and sunny so those attending enjoyed the weekend.
A walk was arranged for Friday 20th September 2024, starting from Pendragon Castle (remains) south of Kirby Stephen, just off B6259/Tommy Road. This 6 1/2mile circular in the Yorkshire Dales was lead by Steve Howard, with 9 members attending the walk, the first 3 miles were uphill crossing over the Carlisle to Settle railway line, heading for the cairn at Little Fell (559m) and then onto High Dolphinsty (582m). From here most of the walk was mostly downhill heading over Mallerstang, then crossing back over the Carlisle to Settle railway line near Turner Hay Hill. We then followed the route north along the River Eden until we reached the car park at Pendragon Castle.
According to legend the original castle was built by Uther Pendragon, father of King Arthur, in the 5th century and may have been the site of his death when a well was poisoned by the Saxons. However, there is no evidence to support the legend that there was a castle here before the 12th century.
On Saturday 21st September 2024, a walk was led by Steve Howard & Mick Higgs leaving from Glaramara Hotel. The walk was a 5 mile circular heading into Seatoller, where our first climb was to the footpath on Little Gategarthdale, then it evened off until we reached Tongue Gill, passing the disused Rigghead Quarries, then dropping down to Dalehead Tarn. Here the group split up: Mick taking members on a lower walk, Steve lead 7 others on a steep climb up to Dale Head (753m). Both groups met up for a coffee at the Honister Slate Mile, following the road until we reach the footpath on Little Gategarthdale, which took us to the pub for refreshments at Yew Tree in Seatoller.
The walk on Sunday, 22 September, was a 7.7 mile circular to Black Moss Pot via Stonethwaite.
We left the Glaramara hotel and turned left onto the (B5289)road towards Stonethwaite, we turned off the road and headed towards chapel house farm, passing past the campsite and through the farmyard on towards St Andrews cemetery then turning right into the village of Stonethwaite. Once into the village we turned left towards Stonethwaite bridge then right towards Smithymire island crossing Gordon Hallworth memorial bridge. The walk then started a steady walk up towards Black Moss pot following the path alongside Langstrath beck, once at Black Moss pot we watched people enjoying themselves jumping in from the sides into the cold clear waters below, we opted for crossing the beck and some got a bit wet while doing this but all crossed safely.
We then stopped for lunch and dried out a little before heading back along the beck and to the Langstrath Country Inn for a cold drink. We then reversed the route back to the Glaramara hotel.
