Lakes Weekend - 16 to 18 September 22

By Steve Howard

Friday 16th September 2022.

Eight members met at the highest (528m) pub in the British Isles at Tan Hill Inn, on the Pennine Way. The 9.1 mile circular was led by Steve Howard, with back up from Mick Higgs. The dry but windy walk headed over Mirk Fell, then for William Gill and downstream along the Gill. We picked up a tarmac road and heading left we turned right onto Sleightholme Moor Road, stopping at the Sheepfold for lunch. After lunch we reached the Pennine Way, turning left on Sleightholme Moor. We then followed the Pennine Way back to Tan Hill Inn, for some well heard refreshments.

Saturday 17th September 2022.

This year 13 members set off from the accommodation at Glaramara Hotel. The 8.2 mile circular walk was led by Tim Darley & Simon Read, with back up from Mick Higgs & Steve Howard, heading along the road for Stonethwaite. We crossed over Stonethwaite Bridge and sadly lost Wendy who turned back due to an old ankle injury. The rest continued up a very steep zig zag climb to Lingy End, from where we headed for Dock Tarn for our coffee stop. We headed north following the footpath for Watendlath Tarn, and once we reached the tarn, we stopped for our lunch. Some members visited the Caffle House Tearooms for a coffee/slice of cake. This café is very popular with many hikers. After lunch we had a slight climb from the tarn along Bracken Platt. Once we got to the top, the rest of the trail was downhill into Rosthwaite and we stopped for refreshments at The Riverside Bar. Leaving Rosthwaite, we followed the River Derwent, along Johnny Wood, for Seatoller, then followed the road back to the hotel.

Sunday 18th September 2022.

Tim & Simon and 2 other members went to Dufton for a walk at Dufton Pike. The remaining 11 members met at the Old Railway Station I (now a hotel) in Keswick. The 7.5 mile return walk from Keswick to Threlkeld via Threlkeld Coffee Shop, along a disused railway line was led by Steve Howard & Mick Higgs, which was a relaxing and pleasant way to finish the weekend.

The club is booked into Glaramara Hotel from 15th September – 17th September 2023.
